Materials, Equipment, and Accessories
Sublimation Blank
For this personalized kid’s bag and luggage tags sublimation project, we used a 2-inch round sublimation keychain. It has a white faux leather (PU-polyurethane) sublimation side that gives beautiful, vibrant colors.
The backside is black, comes with the jumprings (key rings) so it’s ready to be used for your kid’s backpacks, lunch boxes, luggages, sports bags, and more.
Sublimation Printer
We have several printers we use for our tutorials and informational posts. For this particular project, we’re using a converted Epson EcoTank ET-2803 sublimation printer.
The Epson ET-2800 and ET-2803 are the most affordable inkjet printers that can be converted and the sublimation prints from them are amazing. You can see these colors in our final pressed sublimation keychains below.
Our Full Review of the Converted Epson ET-2800 ET-2803 which includes the sublimation ink and the set up process will be helpful for you to see our settings. Both Mac and Windows PC settings are in that post too!
If you want a true, plug and print sublimation printer that does not need to be converted, the Epson SureColor F170 is a great printer. Our Full Review of the Epson F170 Sublimation Printer goes over how easy it is to set up and even the very first print from it did not need any color and print setting changes.
You may also use other printers to create one of these sublimated personalized luggage tags and bag name tags. Our full list of Epson Printers That You Can Convert For Sublimation will give you ideas of which other printers are capable of printing this keychain design.
Here are a few of the ones that you can use for this project:
Sublimation Ink
All converted Epson printers use a third-party sublimation ink. We use Cyclone Ink in our ET-2803 because they have great customer service and they are based in the USA.
You can also use other sublimation ink to include:
Sublimation Paper
Our go to sublimation paper is the Texprint DT Heavy. It is our favorite as it has given us consistent results.
It also came out on top when we tested several sublimation papers. You can see the print results in the Sublimation Paper Comparison Test.
As usual, you also have the option to use any paper and these are the other brands we tested.
Heat Press
The GeoKnight DK20S is a workhorse and has not let us down since we got it several years ago. The best thing about the swing away style is that you reduce the chances of burning your knuckles as compared to a clamshell.
Adhesive
We used Conde’s Prospray for this project instead of heat tape. As you can see below, we ruined one of the keychains when we used heat tape.
The Prospray does not leave any residue and keeps your printed sublimation design stuck to the sublimation blank during the pressing process. And the best thing about this spray is that it is repositionable so you can lift up the sublimation blank and place it back down if you make a mistake with aligning it.
Prospray Adhesive
- Repositionable
- Lasts for hundreds of uses
- Prevents your print from shifting
Butcher Paper
Butcher paper is important in sublimation because it keeps your design from transferring to your heat platen during the pressing process. Unbleached, plain butcher paper is recommended because it does not hold moisture like teflon.
Heat Gloves
Protect your hands from the hot sublimated keychain when you grab it from your heat press.
Jump Ring Pliers
This is a nail saver!
Have you ever opened those jump rings with your nails and broke them in the process? This jump ring pliers will prevent that. They open and hold those jump rings while you slide the keychain through them. .
Sublimation Font
You are free to use any font you want. We offer lots of free fonts for sublimation that you can download or use one of your favorites.
Creative Fabrica is our favorite source for fonts. They have thousands to choose from…which is a good and bad thing. Good because of the variety but bad because it’s so hard to decide!
